First Time at a Spa? Here's Exactly What to Expect at Branford River Spa

First massage? First facial? Totally normal to feel a little awkward — almost every regular guest at Branford River Spa felt the same way before their very first appointment. Here's the simple, judgment-free version of what actually happens, what you do (and don't) need to bring, and how to get the most out of your visit.

What to bring

Honestly — nothing. Every guest at Branford River Spa is provided with a plush robe, slippers, and a private locker. We also have private shower facilities on premise, so you can arrive straight from work or freshen up before heading out afterward. Just bring yourself.

What to wear (and what to take off)

For a massage, you'll undress to your level of comfort — most guests leave underwear on; some don't. You're always covered with a sheet and only the area being worked on is exposed. For a facial, just bring a hair tie. There is no wrong choice.

Arrival: the first 15 minutes

Arrive 10–15 minutes early — settle in, change, sip cucumber water · Fill out a quick health intake (allergies, injuries, pressure preference) · Use the locker for your phone, wallet, and clothes · Your therapist greets you and walks you to your candlelit room

During your treatment

Speak up — pressure too light? Too firm? Cold? Hot? A great therapist wants the feedback. There is no right way to enjoy a massage; some guests chat, most fall asleep. Either is perfectly fine.

Tipping & checkout

A 18–22% tip on the service price is standard in Connecticut. You can add it at checkout — cash, card, or right on your booking. Water, tea, and a few minutes in the relaxation lounge are yours afterward, no rush.
