Prenatal Massage in Branford, CT: Benefits, Safety, and What to Expect
Pregnancy changes almost every muscle group in the body — low back, hips, glutes, shoulders, calves, and feet all carry loads they weren't built for. A licensed prenatal massage at Branford River Spa is designed specifically for that shifting body: side-lying positioning with a full bolster system, therapist-controlled pressure, and pregnancy-safe oils in a candlelit private room.

The real benefits of prenatal massage
Relief from low-back, hip, and sciatic nerve pain · Reduced swelling in the ankles, feet, and hands (lymphatic drainage) · Better sleep and reduced insomnia in the second and third trimester · Lower cortisol and anxiety — measurable stress-hormone drops after a single session · Improved circulation for both parent and baby · Fewer tension headaches from postural changes in the neck and shoulders
When is prenatal massage safe?
For a healthy, low-risk pregnancy, prenatal massage is safe throughout all three trimesters. Most OBs and midwives on the Connecticut Shoreline actively recommend it after the first trimester. If your pregnancy is high-risk, or you've been placed on any activity restrictions, get written clearance from your provider before booking — we'll ask about it at check-in either way.
Trimester-by-trimester: what changes
First trimester: gentle full-body relaxation, extra care around the abdomen, side-lying or semi-reclined positioning based on comfort. Second trimester: focused work on the low back, hips, and glutes as the belly grows and posture shifts. Third trimester: full side-lying with our bolster system, lots of leg-and-foot work for swelling, shorter time on the belly-adjacent areas, and a longer decompression at the end.
Positioning and what makes our room different
We never ask a pregnant guest to lie face-down after the first trimester. Our prenatal setup uses a full side-lying bolster stack — pillows under the head, between the knees, supporting the belly, and behind the back — so your spine stays neutral and your hips stay open. The couples and cedar rooms are both configured for this on request.
What to avoid: pressure points and areas we skip
Deep abdominal work — always skipped during pregnancy · Sustained pressure on specific ankle points (SP6, LI4) associated with uterine stimulation · Hot stones on the low back and abdomen — we use warm (not hot) stones only if requested · Aggressive deep-tissue on the legs — we use lymphatic-drainage strokes instead to protect against blood-clot risk
How often should you book during pregnancy?
Most of our regular prenatal guests book every 3–4 weeks in the second trimester and every 2 weeks in the third trimester. If you're managing significant sciatic pain, hip pain, or swelling, weekly sessions in the final 4–6 weeks are common and safe.

Frequently asked questions
When can I start getting prenatal massages?
Most guests start in the second trimester (after week 13), but a gentle first-trimester session is safe for low-risk pregnancies. Get OB clearance if you're high-risk.
How much is a prenatal massage in Branford, CT?
Priced in line with our standard 60- and 90-minute massages. Book online to see current pricing and live openings.
Do I lie face-down?
No. After the first trimester we use a full side-lying bolster setup — your spine stays neutral, your hips stay open, and there's no pressure on the belly.
Can I get a deep-tissue prenatal massage?
We use medium pressure and lymphatic-drainage technique on the legs to protect against clot risk. Firm-but-safe pressure is fine everywhere else.
Is prenatal massage safe in the third trimester?
Yes, for low-risk pregnancies. Many of our guests book weekly in the final 4–6 weeks for sciatic pain, swelling, and sleep.
Do you offer couples prenatal packages?
Yes — our couples room fits a side-lying prenatal massage next to a standard massage or facial for your partner.
