Salt Cave vs Infrared Sauna in CT — Which One Is Right for You?
Walk into any wellness studio between New Haven and Old Saybrook and you'll hear the same two questions on repeat: 'Should I try a salt cave or an infrared sauna?' and 'Which one actually works?' Both are legitimate therapies with decades of clinical research behind them — but they do completely different things to your body. Here's a CT-therapist breakdown so you can pick the right one for your goals.

What a salt cave (halotherapy) actually does
Salt caves use a halogenerator to disperse micronized pharmaceutical-grade salt particles into the air. You sit in a dim, mineral-walled room for 45 minutes and breathe the salt deep into your lungs. The salt is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and hygroscopic — meaning it pulls moisture and mucus out of your airways. It's most effective for respiratory conditions: chronic sinusitis, mild asthma, post-flu congestion, seasonal allergies, and the dry irritated airways most CT residents fight from October through March.
What an infrared sauna actually does
Infrared saunas heat your body directly with light waves rather than heating the air around you. At 120–140°F (about half a traditional sauna), you can stay in for 30–45 minutes and sweat 3–5× more than you would in a steam room. That deep sweat carries out heavy metals and stored toxins, raises your core temperature like a brisk walk (great for cardiovascular conditioning), and triggers a heat-shock-protein response that boosts immunity for 24–48 hours after each session.
Which one is right for you?
Allergies, sinus issues, post-cold congestion → Salt cave (halotherapy) · Detox, deep recovery, sore muscles, immune boost → Infrared sauna · Better sleep + nervous-system reset → Infrared sauna · Skin clarity (eczema, mild psoriasis) → Salt cave · Pre-massage warm-up → Infrared sauna (30 min before) · Weekly winter maintenance → Rotate both — that's what most CT regulars do
How we use both at Branford River Spa
Our private full-spectrum infrared sauna fits up to three guests and is the most-booked recovery treatment on the CT shoreline. Pair it with a deep-tissue or hot-stone massage and you'll feel the difference for a full week. We also partner with halotherapy specialists across the shoreline when guests need true salt-cave sessions — ask at the front desk and we'll send you to our trusted partners.
